Why Film in Japan?

Japan offers a huge range of filming spots. You can shoot at ancient temples and old gardens, then move to modern cityscapes, snow-capped mountains, and tropical islands. Iconic Tokyo sites like Shibuya Crossing and the neon districts of Shinjuku rank among the most sought-after in the world.

A rich mix of land, culture, and setup makes Japan one of the most flexible places to film. Government rebates and advanced facilities back productions of every size.

Historical Sites

UNESCO sites such as Himeji Castle, Kyoto temples, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, and old shrines suit prestige work.

Island Paradise

Pacific coastlines, the Okinawa islands, and seaside towns give you waterfronts and bold seascapes for luxury shoots.

Modern Cities

Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, and Fukuoka offer sharp modern architecture and bright neon-lit street life.

Diverse Landscapes

The Japanese Alps, Mount Fuji, and cherry blossom gardens give you many looks within easy reach of top transport.

Incentives and Rebates for Filmmakers

Japan runs one of Asia's strongest film incentives through the METI/VIPO Location Incentive Program. A 50% cash rebate on production costs makes Japan more and more appealing to international productions.

Regional film commissions across Japan add location support, permit help, and planning for shoots that show off their areas.

METI/VIPO Location Incentive Program

Japan's flagship incentive gives a 50% cash rebate on production and post-production costs spent in Japan. METI runs it through VIPO. The program caps each project at ¥1 billion (~$6.6M) and takes applications in four rounds a year.

Eligibility and Application Process

Productions must spend ¥500M+ (~$3.3M) in Japan, or run a ¥1B+ total budget with ¥200M+ spent in Japan. Only Japanese companies can apply, so we act as your named local partner to help with applications.

Regional Film Commission Support

Japan's 47 prefectures and major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Okinawa have their own film offices. Each one offers location access, permit help, and production support.
