Feature Film Production Services Across Japan
Our feature film service in Japan handles studio tentpoles, indie dramas, treaty co-productions, and streaming features for theatrical and platform release.
Crews scale from lean 25-person indie units to 150-plus department-led shoots. We build each one from our network of Tokyo and Osaka-based DPs, gaffers, grips, art directors, and 1st ADs. They hold global IMDB credits on titles for A24, Toho, Warner, and Netflix. Our access reaches feudal castles, Kyoto temple precincts, Hokkaido open country, Japan Alps high passes, and the busy streets of Roppongi and Ginza. Permits route through local film commissions and JFC partners.
Shoot support runs from start to finish. That covers budget build, JFC incentive filing, treaty match under bilateral deals, customs and ATA carnet handling for global gear, and post liaison with Tokyo's top edit, VFX, sound, and grade houses.
Period work draws on costume and prop houses with deep stock from the Edo through Showa eras. We also provide on-set VFX oversight for digital-environment and stunt-augment work. From a single recce to a full line-production hand-off, we deliver a Japan shoot that protects your creative aims while keeping the feature on schedule and on budget.
Stage builds book at Toho Studios, Toei Kyoto Studios, Shochiku, and Nikkatsu, matched to scale and look. The Toei Kyoto Studios backlot suits feudal and Edo-era sets, while Tokyo stages carry contemporary builds. Camera packages center on the RED V-Raptor, with HMI, LED, and Steadicam support across day and night work. We staff DPs, gaffers, and grips fluent in English-language coordination, so foreign directors and Japanese crews share one clear plan from prep through wrap.
Finishing runs through Tokyo houses such as Imagica, Sony PCL, and OmnibusJapan. We conform and grade in DaVinci Resolve and master to Rec.709, HDR, or Dolby Vision for theatrical and streaming release. Sound mixes meet your distributor's exact brief. Schedules flex around Golden Week and Obon, when crew and location access tightens. We file J-LOC national incentive paperwork alongside the budget so qualifying spend, billed in JPY at 10 percent consumption tax, claims every benefit it can.
FAQ
Our Production Network
What is Japan's Location Incentive Program (the Japanese film incentive)?
Japan's Location Incentive Program is a cash rebate of up to 50% on qualifying Japanese spend for large-scale international shoots in Japan. That spend covers crew costs, gear rental, post, and other eligible costs. We help shoots meet the eligibility rules and file the application through a Japanese company.
How do you support international co-productions?
We give full co-production support. That spans treaty compliance guidance, Japanese partner introductions, crew and gear planning, location services, and admin help. Our team knows what bilateral treaties with major film-producing nations require.
What crew sizes can you accommodate for feature films?
We support shoots from small indie crews of 20-30 up to major studio shoots that need 150+ crew members. Our network covers every key department, and we coordinate with Japanese unions and guilds as needed.
Can you handle period or costume productions?
Yes. Japan offers top resources for period shoots. These include historic locations, costume houses, prop suppliers, and crews skilled in period filmmaking. We arrange every specialty need for costume dramas.
What locations are available for feature film production?
Japan offers rare range: Tokyo streetscapes, Kansai region historic temples and shrines, Hokkaido countryside, the Japanese Alps, Pacific coastline, Tohoku beaches, and industrial settings. We scout and secure locations across all 47 prefectures.
Do you provide post-production services for feature films?
We connect shoots with Japan's top post houses for editing, grading, VFX, sound design, and mixing. These houses work to global standards, and many offer keen rates that tax incentives push down further.
