SCENE 01 / DRONE VIDEOGRAPHY
Drone Videography Services
Licensed aerial filming across Japan with cinema-grade equipment and full permit coordination.
Drone videography captures sweeping aerial views that set the scale, reveal the landscape, and add cinematic value to any project. Japan offers stunning places to film from above. The range runs from Mount Fuji and the cherry blossom rivers of Kyoto to Tokyo's neon skyline and the beaches of Okinawa. Modern cinema drones deliver smooth footage that once needed a helicopter at far greater cost.
We source JCAB-licensed drone operators and gear packages to match your creative brief. Each setup meets Japan's Civil Aviation Bureau rules under the amended Aviation Act. Our team handles DIPS flight approval, DID (Densely Inhabited District) sign-off, and airspace clearances, so you can add stunning aerial shots to your project with confidence.

JCAB-Cleared Aerial Cinematography Across Japan
Japan's airspace is one of the most tightly ruled in Asia, and we treat that as a feature, not a block.
Each drone operator on our roster holds Level 2 JCAB pilot sign-off under the amended Aviation Act. They file DIPS filings for DID overflight in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka. For work near ruled fields, they line up NOTAM clearance with Haneda, Itami, and Fukuoka air traffic. Mount Fuji aerial work adds Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectural sign-offs. For Setouchi marine scenes and Hokkaido sub-zero shoots, we plan launch points, battery swaps, and warming rules well before the call sheet locks.
Camera payloads scale with the shot. The Inspire 3 with a full-frame Zenmuse X9 handles most doc and commercial briefs. Heavy-lift Alta X and Freefly platforms carry the RED V-Raptor and ARRI Alexa Mini LF for feature aerial units. Kit comes from Hibino and NAC Image Technology rental stock.
Our pilots fly with a licensed visual observer and ¥5M minimum liability cover. They hold prefecture-set local sign-offs for shrines in Asakusa, temple grounds in Kyoto, or coastal launches in Okinawa. The result is footage that cuts in clean with ground-unit cinema cameras and clears broadcast and theatrical QC the first time.
Weather and the calendar drive every aerial schedule. Mount Fuji loses clean light fast once afternoon cloud builds, so we book dawn windows. We hold backup days for rain and high wind. Golden Week in May and Obon in August pack tourist sites like Asakusa and Kyoto, which makes safe launch zones harder to clear. We lock permits and flight slots early to protect the shoot date.
On delivery, footage lands in your post pipeline ready to grade. We shoot RAW or log on the RED V-Raptor and ARRI Alexa Mini LF, then hand off with frame-rate and color notes for a DaVinci Resolve finish. Aerial plates match the ground unit's Rec.709 or HDR reference, so the colorist needs no rebuild. English-language coordination runs from the first scout through the final file handoff.
FAQ
Professional Drone Operations
What permits are required for drone filming in Japan?
Drone filming in Japan needs JCAB operator sign-ups, pilot certification, and location-specific sign-off. Flights in controlled airspace, urban areas, or near airports need extra NOTAM and prefecture permits. Our team handles all of this permit planning for your production.
What camera systems do your drones carry?
Our drones range from the DJI Inspire and Mavic series with built-in cameras to heavy-lift rigs carrying RED Komodo, ARRI Mini, and Sony Venice cameras. We choose the camera based on your quality needs, shot demands, and budget.
Can you fly drones in Tokyo and other restricted areas?
Yes, with the right sign-off. Tokyo and many urban areas have airspace limits that need prefecture permits and JCAB sign-off. Our team has won permits for off-limits areas, and we can advise on what is possible during planning.
How do weather conditions affect drone filming?
Drones need fair weather: no rain, mild winds (mostly under 25-35 km/h based on the drone), and clear visibility. Our team tracks the forecast and builds weather backup days into the schedule. Some drones can fly in tougher conditions.
What insurance coverage do your drone operations have?
Every flight carries full liability insurance that meets Japanese rules (minimum ¥1M, mostly ¥5M for production work). Our team can provide certificates of insurance for your records.
Can drones work alongside other camera platforms?
Yes. We run drone flights alongside ground cameras, cranes, cars, and helicopters. Safety steps keep clear separation and steady communication between the aerial and ground units. Multi-platform shoots do need extra planning.

Productions in Japan that need this often pair it with Time-lapse & Hyperlapse, Multi-Camera Shoots, and Steadicam & Gimbal Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Cable Cam Systems and Wire Cam Systems.
