SCENE 01 / HELICOPTER FILMING
Helicopter Filming
Large-scale aerial cinematography with gyro-stabilized camera systems across Japan.
Here is how this works in practice. Helicopter filming delivers dramatic aerial perspectives with the payload capacity, flight endurance, and altitude range that drones cannot match. In Japan, helicopters equipped with gyro-stabilized mounts capture sweeping vistas over Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps in Nagano, Kyoto temples and Himeji Castle, Tokyo's dense skyline, the Hokkaido wilderness, and the Okinawa archipelago.
Here is the short of it. We set up helicopter filming with JCAB-certified aviation operators and skilled aerial cinematographers across Japan. Our team handles MLIT/JCAB flight sign-off, DID airspace planning, Agency for Cultural Affairs approvals for heritage sites, and safety planning — so your production captures breathtaking footage over Fuji, Kyoto, or Hokkaido's Shiretoko while meeting the highest aviation standards.

Aerial Cinematography Across Japan
When a shoot needs payload, range, and altitude beyond what a drone can deliver, helicopter filming takes over.
Here is how this works in practice. Our aviation partners hold full JCAB sign-off under MLIT. They often run gyro-stabilised Cineflex and Shotover mounts carrying ARRI Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, and RED V-Raptor packages. Coverage spans Mount Fuji, the Japan Alps in Nagano, the temple-scattered hills around Kyoto, the dense Tokyo skyline, Hokkaido's Shiretoko wilderness, and the Okinawan archipelago. Tokyo airspace asks for serious lead time, mainly the bands around the Imperial Palace and Densely Inhabited Districts. Our aviation coordinators run that forms start to finish.
Here is the short of it. Pilots flying our shoots focus on film work, not charter flying. They know the rhythm of a sequence, the care needed for orbits and reveal moves, and how to plan long-range coastal runs over Yokohama Bay or low passes through Hakone's volcanic ground.
Here is the breakdown. Camera operators steer gyro-mounted lenses via remote controllers. Downlinked tracking on the ground keeps the picture visible. Air-to-ground radio keeps directors in talk with the aerial unit. Agency for Cultural Affairs sign-offs for heritage flyovers, NOTAMs, full aviation cover, and weather backup planning are part of each booking. The shoot team can keep focus on what is in frame.
FAQ
Aerial Cinematography Expertise
When should I choose helicopter over drone filming?
Here is the breakdown. Helicopters are ideal for extended aerial takes over Mount Fuji, high-speed sequences, shots needing heavy cinema cameras, long-range coverage across Japan, and situations where drones cannot operate due to JCAB/DID restrictions around Tokyo, the Imperial Palace, or event venues. For quick setups and lower altitudes, drones may be more cost-effective.
What camera systems do you use for helicopter filming?
We operate gyro-stabilized systems including Cineflex and Shotover mounts. This can carry ARRI, RED, and other cinema cameras. These systems give rock-steady footage even during dynamic flight maneuvers and allow remote camera control.
Can you film over cities like Tokyo or Kyoto?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Yes, with proper sign-off. Tokyo airspace around the Imperial Palace is very off-limits, and many Kyoto temples prohibit commercial filming. But we can obtain permits for helicopter filming with advance planning. We set up with JCAB and the Agency for Cultural Affairs to secure needed approvals.
What types of helicopters do you use?
Here is how the picture comes together. We work with many helicopter types based on your needs—from smaller aircraft for tight mountain maneuvers to larger helicopters for heavy camera systems and extended flights. Aircraft selection depends on altitude, shot needs, and payload needs.
How do you handle air-to-ground coordination?
We use pro radio comms kit for real-time planning between helicopter crew and ground teams. Directors can communicate with pilots and camera operators. We give video downlink for live tracking of aerial shots.
How far in advance should we book helicopter filming?
Here is what we have to work with. We recommend 4-6 weeks minimum for helicopter operations in Japan to allow time for JCAB sign-off and planning. Shoots over Tokyo DID zones, the Imperial Palace area, or heritage sites mostly need longer lead times.
