SCENE 01 / LOOK DEVELOPMENT

Look Development

Creative visual style development and LUT creation for distinctive cinematic aesthetics that define your production's unique identity.

Scroll

Look development sets the visual style and color of a production before principal photography starts. The work tests cameras, lenses, lighting, and LUTs together. From those tests come reference images and tech specs that guide the whole production toward one unified look.

We support look development by setting up camera tests, LUT creation, and joint work between your cinematographer and colorist. Our team books the testing rooms and tech tools you need. That way your visual look is defined, logged, and ready to guide steady image capture from day one.

Look Development and LUT Creation for Japan Productions

Look dev locks the visual language before camera turns over.

The Japanese shoots we back run from Tokyo streaming series to feature work across Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, and rural Hokkaido. Each one gains from prep time in tuned grading suites, with DP and colorist working side by side. Our look-dev sessions run out of Tokyo houses set to Rec.709 and DCI-P3. Overflow runs through Imagica, Sony PCL, and OmnibusJapan when a job needs HDR look-dev in Dolby Vision or HDR10+ before principal photography. We test against sample camera footage from ARRI, RED, Sony, and Canon, under the real lighting the shoot will face on set.

Each delivery holds monitor LUTs for the camera feed and dailies, tech LUTs that keep the full RAW dynamic range, and style guides that log the intent scene by scene. Every team, from gaffers to DIT to dailies colorist, works from the same reference.

We can study and reinterpret film or photo references, but we build unique looks rather than copies. The aim is a look that belongs to your story alone. You get a set, logged look ready to guide steady capture from day one, and it travels clean into the final grade without surprises.

Look dev is best booked in pre-production, ahead of the first shoot day. We schedule camera tests and grading sessions around your prep window, so LUTs are ready before the camera turns over. A short look-dev block suits a single commercial, while a feature with many setups needs a longer run. The same DaVinci Resolve chain that builds the looks carries them into the final grade, so on-set monitoring and post stay matched.

We run each session bilingually, with English-language coordination beside our Japanese teams. Overseas DPs and directors stay close through remote test reviews and notes in plain English. That keeps the look brief clear across the language gap. Quotes come in Japanese yen and state the 10 percent consumption tax up front. Camera tests, LUT builds, and style-guide delivery are costed as separate lines, so the look-dev budget stays clear from first reference to final hand-off.

      FAQ

      Frequently Asked Questions

When should we start look development?

Ideally during pre-production. Early look development lets you use tracking LUTs on set, keep dailies steady, and line up every department on the visual direction. However, we can also build looks during post-prod if needed.

What do you need to create a look?

We work best with sample footage from your camera tests or early production, visual references such as films, photographs, and artwork, mood boards, and a talk about your creative goals. The more we know about your story and vision, the better we can serve your project.

How do LUTs work in production?

We create tracking LUTs that apply to camera feeds and dailies, so everyone on set sees a preview of the intended look. These tech LUTs are tuned for different display types and viewing conditions, and they keep the full dynamic range in your RAW footage.

Can you match a specific film or reference look?

We can study and recreate the qualities you like in a reference, though we build a unique take rather than an exact copy. Our goal is to learn what draws you to a reference and craft a distinctive look that fits your own story and footage.

Productions in Japan that need this often pair it with Color Correction Services, Color Grading Services, and Online Conform & QC Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Narrative & Documentary Editing and Foley Recording Services.
