A Director of Photography shapes how a production looks. Each one makes creative calls on lighting, camera movement, lens choice, and framing. Japan's striking visual style — from the neon streets of Shibuya to the calm temples of Kyoto — has inspired camera artists worldwide. Masters like Hoyte van Hoytema ASC FSF NSC have shot widely in Tokyo, and local DPs bring sharp precision to their craft.

We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who grasp both the creative and the practical sides of your shoot. Whether you film at Toho Studios or on location in Osaka, our team matches you with DPs who bring the right visual sense. They draw gear from rental houses like Imagica and NAC Image Technology.

Directors of Photography Working Across Japan

Our DP roster shoots wherever the work takes you.

Sites span stage builds at Toho Studios in Setagaya, bright night exteriors through Shinjuku and Shibuya, period-drama coverage on Kyoto's temple grounds, and run-and-gun doc work across Osaka and Fukuoka. Many of our DPs hold JSC credits or have lit global features back-to-back with Japanese broadcast work. The same operator who shoots a TV commercial inside an Asakusa ryokan one week can step onto a feature aerial unit above Mount Fuji the next, and never miss a beat on schedule or kit.

On the tech side, our DPs pull camera and lens packages through Tokyo's trusted rental network — Imagica, Sony PCL, NAC Image Technology. They match ARRI Alexa 35, Sony Venice 2, or RED V-Raptor bodies to the job's grade and aspect ratio.

We build the full camera team around the DP, with a 1st AC, a 2nd AC, a DIT, a video assist, and a data wrangler. We also bring in the gaffer and key grip the DP trusts. Prep covers shot-listing in Japanese and English, site tech scouts in Yokohama or Hokkaido, and a clear lighting plan that honors each site's permit limits and all-night noise rules.

Our DPs plan exposure and color science from the first prep meeting. They build show LUTs and grade references so the DIT can monitor a Rec.709 or HDR image on set. At wrap, the DP hands the colorist a clear note on lighting ratios, lens character, and intent. That keeps the look intact through a DaVinci Resolve finish, whether the post house sits in Tokyo or abroad.

Scheduling shapes how a DP works in Japan. The Japanese Labor Standards Act sets clear limits on crew hours, so we plan turnaround and meal breaks into each day. Golden Week in May and the Obon period in August tighten studio space and crew bookings across Tokyo and Kansai. We confirm DP dates early. English-language coordination runs through prep, shoot, and the handoff to post.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

We give DPs at every experience level. Rising camera artists suit indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs bring solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs carry feature film and global broadcast work. We match that experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We read your creative brief, reference images, and budget, then shortlist DPs with the right genre experience and visual fit. You get picked showreels and can ask to speak with candidates before you book.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Our DPs work fluently across all major cinema camera systems, including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many focus on certain systems, yet all adapt to the needs of the shoot and to what the rental houses have free.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring their own camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We arrange the gear around your wishes and budget, whether it comes from the DP, a rental house, or the production itself.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Japan?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Japan and handle their work permits and travel. We also place Japanese DPs on global shoots that need local camera talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover camera work on set during shoot hours. Prep work such as tech scouts, shot listing, and meetings is mostly billed apart. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours cost extra and depend on the size of the job.

Productions in Japan that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
