SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER CAMERA OPERATORS
Underwater Filming Services
Certified underwater cinematography for marine, pool, and aquatic productions across Japan.
Underwater camera operators blend pro diving skill with cinema camera craft to shoot footage below the surface. In Japan, our operators work Okinawa's bright coral reefs and the mild waters near Izu Peninsula. They also shoot in the top studio tanks at Toho Studios and Nikkatsu, where they deliver sharp subaquatic visuals.
We connect you with certified underwater camera pros who know Japan's varied marine settings. Our network spans Okinawa's tropical reefs and the kelp forests of Hokkaido. Our team sets up waterproof housing, lighting, safety divers, and logistics, so your underwater scenes are shot safely and meet Japan's strict production standards.

Underwater Cinematography Across Japan's Waters
Japan offers a wide range of underwater settings within one shoot schedule. Our dive DPs work the coral reefs and clear tropical water of Okinawa and the Yaeyama islands. They also cover the mild kelp beds of Izu Peninsula, a short rail ride from Tokyo.
The same crew dives the cold currents off Hokkaido, where dry suits are a must, and works the marine pens of the Setouchi Inland Sea. Each operator on the roster holds PADI Divemaster or higher with commercial sign-offs, plus focused cinema training. On actor-in-water and stunt scenes, each one pairs with a separate safety diver and surface lead.
On the kit side, we fit Nauticam and Gates housings around ARRI Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, RED V-Raptor, and the lighter Sony FX6 or Canon C70 bodies. We source these through Imagica, Sony PCL, and pro Tokyo marine vendors.
Pool and tank work routes into the set stages at Toho Studios and Nikkatsu in Chofu. There, HMI light from above and dedicated underwater LEDs give us full creative control of the look. We scope chamber standby, JCG (Japan Coast Guard) notices, and local fishing-co-op liaison into each open-water shoot, so the day stays steady.
Water conditions drive the schedule. Okinawa reefs read clearest outside typhoon season, while the Hokkaido cold-water windows are short and weather-bound. We scout dive sites and book early. Golden Week in May and Obon in August fill coastal dive operators and ferries, so we lock boats and permits ahead. A controlled tank at Toho Studios stays the dependable fallback when an open-water day blows out.
Underwater plates have to match the topside grade, so we protect the look from the dive plan on. Each housing feeds a calibrated underwater monitor on a Rec.709 or HDR reference, and the operator holds the DP's show LUT. We log depth, lens, and frame rate for every take. The colorist gets a clean handoff for a DaVinci Resolve finish, in Tokyo or abroad, with English-language coordination throughout.
FAQ
Professional Underwater Operations
What certifications do your underwater operators hold?
Our underwater camera operators hold pro PADI, CMAS, or equal certifications suited to the filming depths and conditions. Many also hold pro dive shooting certifications and carry HSE or equal commercial diving qualifications for tough shoots.
What camera systems can you use underwater?
We run underwater housings for ARRI Alexa Mini, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, Sony Venice/FX6, and Blackmagic cameras. The housing we pick depends on your camera package, the features you need, and the dive depth. We also use dedicated underwater cinema cameras.
Can you film with actors underwater?
Yes. We work with trained water safety coordinators and coach actors for underwater work. Non-diving actors can be filmed in controlled shallow water with safety divers on hand. Tough underwater stunts need focused planning and careful safety prep.
What locations in Japan are suitable for underwater filming?
Japan offers many underwater filming spots: Okinawa (clear tropical water, marine life), the Sea of Japan and Pacific coasts (mixed conditions), lakes and rivers (freshwater settings), and many studio tanks and pools for controlled shoots.
How do you handle underwater lighting?
We use dedicated underwater LED and HMI lights in waterproof housings. For pool and tank work, light from above the surface can reach the subject well. Deep or murky water needs its own underwater lighting package, which we plan during pre-production.
What are the safety requirements for underwater filming?
All underwater work needs risk reviews, dive plans, certified safety divers, surface support, and emergency steps. We meet Japanese diving rules and film industry safety standards. Tough sequences may need hyperbaric chamber standby.
