Scroll

Underwater camera operators combine professional diving certification with cinema camera expertise to capture footage beneath the surface. In Japan, operators work in Okinawa's vibrant coral reefs, the temperate waters around Izu Peninsula, and world-class studio tank facilities at Toho Studios and Nikkatsu, delivering precise subaquatic imagery.

We connect you with certified underwater camera professionals experienced in Japan's diverse marine environments. Our network covers everything from Okinawa's tropical reefs to the kelp forests of Hokkaido. We coordinate waterproof housing, lighting, safety divers, and logistics so your underwater sequences are captured safely and meet Japan's exacting production standards.

Underwater Cinematography Across Japan's Waters

Japan offers a wide range of underwater settings inside one shoot schedule. Our dive DPs work the coral reefs and tropical clarity of Okinawa and the Yaeyama islands. They cover the temperate kelp of Izu Peninsula a short rail ride from Tokyo.

Here is how this works in practice. The same crew dives the cold currents off Hokkaido where dry suits are a must. They also work the marine pens of the Setouchi Inland Sea. Every operator on the roster holds PADI Divemaster or higher with commercial sign-offs, plus specific cinema training. They pair with a separate safety diver and surface lead on actor-in-water and stunt scenes.

Here is the short of it. On the kit side, we fit Nauticam and Gates housings around ARRI Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, RED V-Raptor, and the lighter Sony FX6 or Canon C70 bodies. Sources include Imagica, Sony PCL, and specialist Tokyo marine vendors.

Here is the breakdown. Pool and tank work routes into the set stages at Toho Studios and Nikkatsu in Chofu. There, HMI light from above and dedicated underwater LEDs give us full creative control of the look. Chamber standby, JCG (Japan Coast Guard) notices, and local fishing-co-op liaison are scoped into every open-water shoot, so the day stays steady.

FAQ

Professional Underwater Operations

What certifications do your underwater operators hold?

Our underwater camera operators hold professional PADI, CMAS, or equivalent certifications appropriate for the filming depths and conditions. Many hold specialist underwater cinematography certifications and have HSE or equivalent commercial diving qualifications for complex productions.

What camera systems can you use underwater?

We operate underwater housings for ARRI Alexa Mini, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, Sony Venice/FX6, and Blackmagic cameras. Housing selection depends on your camera package, required features, and depth requirements. We also use specialized underwater cinema cameras.

Can you film with actors underwater?

Yes. We work with trained water safety coordinators and provide actor coaching for underwater work. Non-diving actors can be filmed in controlled shallow water with safety divers. Complex underwater stunts require specialized coordination and safety planning.

What locations in Japan are suitable for underwater filming?

Japan offers diverse underwater filming locations: Okinawa (clear tropical water, marine life), Sea of Japan and Pacific coasts (diverse conditions), lakes and rivers (freshwater environments), and numerous studio tanks and pools for controlled shoots.

How do you handle underwater lighting?

We use specialized underwater LED and HMI lights in waterproof housings. For pool and tank work, above-water lighting can penetrate effectively. Deep or murky water requires dedicated underwater lighting packages planned during pre-production.

What are the safety requirements for underwater filming?

All underwater work requires risk assessments, dive plans, certified safety divers, surface support, and emergency protocols. We comply with Japanese diving regulations and film industry safety standards. Complex sequences may require hyperbaric chamber standby.

Productions in Japan that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Director of Photography Services, and Multi-Camera Shoots for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Lighting and Camera & Cinematography.
