Green Screen Services

Professional chroma key filming for VFX and compositing across Japan.

Scroll

Green screen filming uses chroma key backdrops to isolate subjects, so they can be composited against virtual backgrounds, settings, or visual effects in post-prod. The technique sits at the heart of modern filmmaking. In Japan, Toho Studios leases Stages 7 and 10 to Netflix, and Toei's ¥2bn virtual production spend backs J-LOC's incentive of up to 50%, which ranks among Asia's most generous.

We build green screen setups at Toho Studios in Tokyo, with 8 stages from 319 to 1,415m², and at Toei Kyoto Studios, which has 11 stages including Japan's 3rd largest plus the country's largest outdoor backlot. The footprint also covers Toei Tokyo Studios and Nikkatsu Studios. Our team sources cyclorama stages, portable backdrops, and the lighting needed for clean chroma key extraction. Footage then hands off straight to OMNIBUS JAPAN, THE SEVEN, Imagica Entertainment, and vfxNova for compositing, 4K/6K/HDR finishing, and DaVinci Resolve workflows.

Chroma Key Stages Across Tokyo and Kyoto

Green-screen work in Japan is anchored by Toho Studios in Tokyo. Eight stages range from 319 to 1,415 square metres, and Netflix holds long-term leases on Stages 7 and 10.

Toei Kyoto Studios adds eleven more stages, including Japan's third-largest plus the country's biggest outdoor backlot. Toei Tokyo Studios and Nikkatsu Studios round out the chroma-key footprint with cyclorama walls, drive-in access, and climate-controlled soundproofed sets. The J-LOC subsidy of up to 50% backs shoots that meet the qualifying spend bars, which keeps large-scale VFX prep cost-viable for global features.

Lighting is where clean keys are won. Our Tokyo and Kyoto gaffers light the backgrounds evenly, split the talent from spill, and place tracking markers and reference HDRIs. Work with VFX supervisors begins right at prep.

When stages are not needed, portable green-screen kits travel to site shoots. Pop-up backdrops and mobile lighting packages serve everything from doc interviews to brand campaigns. Footage hands off straight to OMNIBUS JAPAN in Akasaka, THE SEVEN under the TBS broadcast group, Imagica Entertainment for high-volume finishing, and vfxNova for comp work. The chain covers 4K, 6K, and HDR through DaVinci Resolve and Nuke.

The crew on a chroma day is built for the key. Our Tokyo and Kyoto gaffers run HMI and LED backlight to hold an even field across the cyclorama. A separate front rig lifts the talent off the screen and kills spill. A VFX supervisor and DIT sit on set from the first setup. They flag edge problems and tracking-marker gaps before the take, not in post when a fix costs days.

Scheduling matches stage availability to the build. Large cyclorama setups at Toho or Toei need a prep day before the shoot day. We lock that window early and pad time for lighting and marker placement. On wrap we hand off clean plates, reference HDRIs, and tracking data graded in DaVinci Resolve, with Rec.709 and HDR passes as the brief needs. Japanese consumption tax of 10% applies, and all quotes are issued in JPY.

FAQ

Chroma Key Expertise

Do you provide green screen studios?

Yes. We partner with Toho Studios in Tokyo, with 8 stages from 319 to 1,415m², Toei Kyoto Studios, with 11 stages including Japan's 3rd largest plus the country's largest outdoor backlot, Toei Tokyo Studios, and Nikkatsu Studios. These range from small interview setups to huge cyclorama stages.

Can you set up green screens on location?

Yes. We offer portable green screen kits, including pop-up backgrounds, fabric screens, and mobile lighting packages. Our team can build chroma key setups in almost any Japanese location that has enough space and power.

What about blue screen vs green screen?

We work with both green and blue screens to suit your shoot. Blue screen often wins for blonde hair or scenes with green elements. Our team advises based on your compositing needs and VFX pipeline.

How do you ensure clean keys?

Clean keys need even background lighting, clear separation from the talent, spill control, and care for edge quality. Our Japanese teams know these needs and set up the stage for strong compositing.

Do you coordinate with VFX supervisors?

Yes. We work closely with your VFX team, whether in-house or at Japanese houses like OMNIBUS JAPAN, THE SEVEN, Imagica Entertainment, or vfxNova, to capture tracking markers, reference photography, HDRIs, and clean plates.

What resolution and formats do you support?

We shoot green screen in formats up to 8K, based on the camera you pick. Our team makes sure the footage meets the resolution and codec needs of your post-prod pipeline, and 4K/6K/HDR workflows are standard at Japanese VFX houses.

Productions in Japan that need this often pair it with Virtual Reality Filming, Virtual Production, and AR Production for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Sound Recordist Teams and Sound & Audio.
