SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER LIGHTING
Underwater Lighting
Submersible lighting for your Japanese underwater production.
Underwater lighting needs waterproof fixtures to light subjects below the surface. Japan's archipelago offers rare range, from the warm clear coral waters of Okinawa to the volcanic seascapes of the Izu Peninsula and Sanriku Coast, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Japan. Each site calls for fixtures matched to depth, daylight, and visibility.
We supply submersible lighting rigs and trained dive crews across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido, and Okinawa. Our team sets up dive-rated LED and HMI fixtures, battery systems, and skilled underwater gaffers. For coastal shoots, we plan the work with the coast guard and harbor authorities.

On Location
Submersible Lighting for Japanese Marine Productions
Our underwater gaffers run dive-rated LED and HMI packages across the full Japanese coastal range.
That range spans warm clear coral water in Okinawa and Iriomote, manta paths in the Yaeyama Islands, the mild Izu Peninsula south of Tokyo, the volcanic seascapes of the Sanriku Coast, and the colder meeting waters of the Sea of Japan. We match the kit to each site by depth, daylight, and sight, with fixtures rated to 100 metres or deeper, daylight-balanced HMIs for large-scene throws, and compact LED units that run cool for close actor work.
Our crews are skilled divers first and lighting techs second. Battery systems, surface power runs, and communication rigs route through our Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Okinawa bases. For open-water shoots, we handle Japan Coast Guard liaison and harbour authority permits.
Pool-stage and water-tank work at Toho, Toei, and Nikkatsu covers set fashion, music video, commercial, and feature shoots. We fix red-light loss with filters on the fixture, rather than leave the colour fix to post. What your DP sees on the monitor is what the grade carries through.
Power planning sits at the heart of every open-water rig. Sealed batteries feed the LED and HMI heads, while surface generators back the long throws on tank days. Dive gaffers set each fixture by hand, then trim output once the subject is in frame. Coastal calls run on the dive table, with rest built in under the Japanese Labor Standards Act. We coordinate in English and quote in JPY, with the 10 per cent consumption tax shown per line.
Light placement is the first step in the grade, so we shape it on set. Daylight-balanced output gives the colorist clean tone to build from. We finish in DaVinci Resolve, then deliver to Rec.709, HDR, or Dolby Vision, as the platform asks. Imagica and Sony PCL conform and master longer pieces. Camera reports and lighting notes travel with the footage, so NHK, Fuji TV, and Netflix Japan deliverables match what the DP saw underwater.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What underwater lighting options do you offer?
We offer LED and HMI submersible lights rated for many depths. They suit Okinawa's clear coral water as well as the cooler Izu Peninsula and Sanriku Coast. LED units run cool, while HMI gives strong daylight-balanced output for larger scenes.
How deep can you light underwater?
Our gear is rated for many depths, with many units good to 100m or more. The depth you need depends on the shoot, and we pick gear to match.
Do you provide dive-qualified lighting technicians?
Yes. Our underwater lighting technicians are trained divers who know both lighting craft and dive safety. They can run lights underwater while they keep to proper dive protocols.
What about color temperature underwater?
Water absorbs red light fast as depth grows. We use daylight-balanced lights and can add filters to make up for it. It is far easier to fix color with the right lighting than to fix it in post.
Can you light large underwater areas?
Yes. We can deploy many units for large-scale underwater lighting setups. This takes careful planning for power, placement, and safety, yet it opens the door to dramatic underwater scenes.
What Japanese waters do you work in?
We work the warm reef waters of Okinawa, the volcanic seascapes of the Izu Peninsula and Sanriku Coast, and the Sea of Japan. For controlled scenes, we also shoot in pool stages and water tanks at Tokyo and Osaka studios.
