Gaffer & Lighting Services Japan
Professional gaffers and lighting crews with expertise in LED, HMI, and tungsten systems. From intimate interviews to large-scale nighttime shoots across Japan.
The gaffer and lighting team turn the Director of Photography's vision into working lighting setups on set. In Japan, gaffers work at Toho Studios, Nikkatsu Studios, and Shochiku's Kyoto facilities. There they plan and run lighting with the care and craft that define Japanese filmmaking.
We build skilled gaffer and lighting teams matched to your production's scale, style, and tech needs. Gear comes through rental houses like NAC Image Technology and Yodoyabashi Camera. Our team handles crew availability, gear sourcing, and department logistics so your lighting team arrives fully prepared.

Gaffer-Led Lighting Departments Across Japan
Japanese gaffers come out of a trade that takes lighting craft very seriously, and that shows up on the call sheet.
The senior gaffers on our roster trained on Toho, Nikkatsu, and Shochiku features. They now move freely between feature work, NHK and Fuji TV broadcast, and global commercial campaigns. A Tokyo-based gaffer might tech-scout a Shinjuku rooftop, a temple interior in Kyoto, and a beach build in Okinawa inside the same week. Their lighting plots respect each site's permit limits, neighbour noise rules, and the 100V / 50Hz-60Hz power split between eastern and western Japan.
Team builds scale to the job. A single owner-operator gaffer is enough for an Asakusa interview day, while mid-tier dramas often run a gaffer plus best-boy electric and two sparks. Feature and high-end commercial builds bring in rigging gaffers, power packs operators, and dimmer board ops.
HMI, tungsten, and full LED packages come through Hibino, Imagica, NAC Image Technology, and the Yodoyabashi rental net in Osaka. Each electric crew on the network carries shoot-liability cover and signs Japanese rental house contracts direct. Because the crews work in either Japanese or English, global DPs hit the ground running.
Booking a lighting team in Japan turns on the calendar. Senior gaffers and HMI stock book out fast across Golden Week in May and the Obon week in August. We confirm crew and packages well before those peaks. Day rates follow the Japanese Labor Standards Act, so our coordinators plan turnaround and overtime cleanly. Every gaffer quote lists the 10 percent consumption tax in JPY, with English-language liaison kept open from the first prep call.
Our gaffers light with the finish in mind, not just the take. They lock color temperature and exposure references with the DP, then log fixture data through each setup day. That record travels with the footage to Imagica, Sony PCL, or OmnibusJapan for the grade. A Setagaya stage interior and a Minato rooftop night cut together clean. The colorist then hits Rec.709 or HDR delivery targets without rebuilding looks from scratch.
FAQ
Our Lighting Network
What does a gaffer do on set?
The gaffer heads the electrical and lighting department and carries out the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, run the electric crew, set up gear, and keep power distribution safe across the production.
What crew positions are in a lighting department?
A full lighting department has the Gaffer as department head and the Best Boy Electric as the gaffer's assistant, who runs crew and gear. Electricians and Sparks set up and run the lights, and larger shoots add Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.
Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?
Crew and gear are mostly booked apart. We can set up gear packages from Japanese rental houses to round out your crew booking. Some gaffers carry their own gear for smaller shoots.
How many electricians do I need for my production?
Crew size depends on production scale. Small shoots may need just a gaffer, while medium shoots usually need a gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians. Larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.
Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?
Yes. Our gaffers are skilled at working with global cinematographers and know global terms, techniques, and workflow needs. Many are bilingual in Japanese and English.
Do you provide generators and power distribution?
We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators come as part of crew packages for shoots that need major power setups.
